Holster Retention Explained: Passive vs Active and How to Adjust It

Holster retention is the resistance a holster applies to keep a pistol in place until you deliberately draw it. Passive retention comes from friction and the shape of the shell, most often a molded ridge that snaps over the trigger guard, and it is adjusted with one or more tension screws. Active retention adds a device you must consciously release, such as a thumb break, hood or lever, before the pistol can leave the holster. Most concealed carriers run passive retention, set firm enough that an unloaded pistol stays put when the holster is held upside down and shaken, and they adjust it a quarter turn at a time.
Why retention matters more than most people think
A holster does two jobs. It covers the trigger so nothing can reach it, and it holds the pistol through everything a day contains: bending to tie a boot, getting in and out of a truck, a fall on ice. Retention is the second job. Too loose, and the pistol can walk out of the shell while you sit or lift. Too tight, and the draw hangs up while the holster tries to leave the belt with the pistol.
Good retention is a range, not a number. The pistol should release with a firm, deliberate pull along the axis of the holster and stay put under anything short of that.
Passive retention
Passive retention is retention with no moving parts. The shell is molded closely to the pistol, and a ridge or detent inside the shell catches the trigger guard when the pistol seats, usually with an audible click. Friction between the shell and the slide adds to the hold. To draw, you simply pull hard enough to pop the trigger guard past the detent.
The strengths are simplicity and speed: one less step in the draw and one less part to fail. The weakness is drift. Heat, sweat, dust and months of daily wear change the fit slightly, and the screws that set the tension can back out, so passive retention needs to be checked on a schedule rather than once.
Active retention
Active retention is a mechanical device that positively locks the pistol in the holster and must be defeated by the user before the draw. Common forms include a thumb-break strap that snaps over the back of the slide, a rotating hood that covers the rear of the pistol, and an internal lever released by the thumb or index finger during the grip. Duty and open-carry holsters use it because a visible pistol is exposed to grabs and hard contact all day.
The strength is a positive lock that does not depend on friction. The costs are bulk, an extra step in the draw and a training burden, because the release only helps once it is automatic. Some manufacturers grade active holsters as Level I, II or III. Those definitions are not standardized, so read what the device actually does.

How retention is adjusted on typical holsters
Tension screws
On most passive-retention holsters, the shell is held together near the trigger guard by one or more screws with a rubber or polymer spacer between the halves. Tightening compresses the spacer and pulls the shell closer around the pistol, which raises retention. Loosening does the opposite.
Work in quarter turns; a full turn can go from loose to nearly locked. Adjust, test, adjust again. If the screws will not hold a setting, a small drop of non-permanent thread locker is the common fix, but do not glue anything you may need to adjust later.
Retention devices
On active-retention holsters, adjustment usually means positioning the strap so it snaps securely without being so tight that it slows the release, or setting the hood so it closes fully and opens cleanly.
Screws that are not for retention
Clip and mount screws set where the holster rides and how it cants. They do not change how tightly the shell grips the pistol, so leave them alone when you are adjusting retention and tighten them separately.

How to test retention safely
Every retention test happens with an unloaded, verified pistol, no exceptions.
- Unload and verify. Remove the magazine. Lock the slide back. Look into the chamber and the magazine well, then run a finger across the chamber to confirm by touch. Put all ammunition, including loaded magazines, in another room.
- Apply the four rules anyway. Treat the pistol as loaded, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger, and know what is beyond the muzzle.
- Seat the pistol. Insert it into the holster and feel for the trigger-guard click. If it does not seat fully, stop and find out why.
- Shake test. Hold the holster upside down over a bed or a soft surface and shake it firmly. The pistol should stay in the shell. If it falls or slides, tighten a quarter turn and repeat.
- Draw test. Mount the holster on your belt where you actually wear it. Take a normal firing grip with your finger off the trigger and draw slowly, then at a realistic pace. The pistol should release with a firm pull without lifting the holster off the belt. If it hangs up, loosen a quarter turn and repeat.
- Movement test. With the unloaded pistol holstered, sit, stand, bend at the waist, squat and jog in place for a minute. Then check that the pistol is still fully seated.
- Reholster deliberately. Look the pistol back into the holster, clear any clothing, and keep the muzzle in a safe direction. Reholstering deserves as much attention as the draw.

Common mistakes
- Over-tightening. Cranking the screws until the shell barely releases stresses the shell and produces a draw that fails when you are cold or sweaty. Firm is the target, not immovable.
- Running loose because it feels fast. A loose holster gives a smooth draw on the range and a pistol on the floor at the grocery store. Pass the shake test first, then work on speed.
- Testing with a loaded pistol. Never. Unload, verify, ammunition out of the room.
- Ignoring the active device. A hood or thumb break you never train will stop you, not help you, under stress.
- Adjusting the wrong screws. Clip and mount screws change position, not grip.
