Paddle Holster vs Belt Slide vs IWB Clip: Fobus, Blackhawk, Safariland and TRX Compared
Short answer: A paddle holster is the fastest holster to put on and take off: a contoured paddle slides inside the waistband and the holster rides outside it, so you never thread your belt. A belt slide (belt loop) holster is the most stable, and an IWB clip holster is the most concealable. Brands such as Fobus, Blackhawk and Safariland made paddle holsters popular; the US SAVAGE TRX Ambidextrous Holster PRO uses the same paddle idea with a rail-mounted, ambidextrous holster body.
Key facts
- Paddle holster: the paddle sits between your pants and your body; friction and the paddle's shape hold it in place. On and off in seconds, belt optional but recommended.
- Belt slide / belt loop holster: the belt passes through loops on the holster. Most stable, slowest to take off.
- IWB clip holster: the whole holster sits inside the waistband, held by a clip. Best concealment, least comfortable for some body types.
- The TRX paddle is listed as a PA9 polymer paddle with a silicone pad on the back to resist loosening.
How a paddle holster works
The paddle is a flat, slightly curved plate attached behind the holster. You slide it down inside the waistband of your pants, so the waistband and belt press it against your body while the holster and pistol sit outside the pants. Many paddles have a ridge or hook at the bottom that catches under the belt so the holster does not come out with the pistol on the draw. That makes paddle holsters popular for range days, open carry on private land, duty-style training and anyone who takes the holster off several times a day, for example before getting into a vehicle or entering a place where carry is not allowed.
The trade-off is stability. A paddle can rock slightly under a heavy pistol, and on the draw a weak paddle can lift. That is why paddle design, the grip of the back surface and a firm belt all matter.
Paddle vs belt slide vs IWB clip: comparison
| Factor | Paddle (Fobus, Blackhawk, Safariland, TRX) | Belt slide / belt loop | IWB clip |
|---|---|---|---|
| On and off | Seconds, no belt threading | Must thread the belt | Seconds with a clip |
| Stability | Good; best with a firm belt | Best | Good |
| Concealment | Moderate, needs a cover garment | Moderate, rides close | Best |
| Comfort seated | Good | Good | Varies with body type |
| Best for | Range, frequent on/off, open carry | All-day OWB carry, heavy pistols | Everyday concealed carry |
What to look for in a paddle holster
- A paddle that grips. A textured or padded back resists sliding. The TRX uses a silicone pad on the back of the paddle.
- Full trigger coverage. The holster body must cover the trigger guard completely.
- Secure retention. The pistol should stay in when the holster is turned upside down (unloaded). Our guide to passive vs active retention explains the options.
- Fit for your pistol. Most paddle holsters are molded for one model. The TRX attaches to the pistol's accessory rail instead, so it fits many double-stack Glock, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Sig Sauer and CZ pistols with an integral rail. The TRX Holster Adapter extends that fit.
- Left or right hand. Many paddles are side-specific. The TRX line is ambidextrous; see ambidextrous holsters explained.
Which TRX model
- TRX Ambidextrous Holster PRO ($46.95): the core paddle holster.
- TRX Ambidextrous Holster PRO ($58.95): includes a free adapter, so one holster covers two pistols.
- X2 TRX Ambidextrous Holster ($97.95): one for you and one for a partner, or one per pistol.
- Premium Pro Pack ($138.85): three TRX holsters plus an AR wall mount.
Whatever paddle holster you choose, wear it with a firm belt over the paddle. Our gun belt guide covers Kore, Nexbelt and Blue Alpha options.
Quick answer
Are paddle holsters good for concealed carry? They work under a jacket or untucked shirt, but an IWB holster conceals better. Paddle holsters shine when you take the holster on and off often.
Fobus vs Blackhawk vs Safariland paddle? All three make model-specific paddle holsters with different retention systems. Choose by fit for your exact pistol and the retention you are comfortable with.
Do paddle holsters need a belt? They can be worn without one, but a firm belt over the paddle is much more stable and safer on the draw.
Can one paddle holster fit several pistols? Molded paddles usually fit one model. A rail-mounted design like the TRX fits many railed double-stack pistols; check your model before ordering.
Always follow the four rules of firearm safety and practice the draw with an unloaded pistol before carrying. Carry laws vary by state. Brand names are trademarks of their owners and are mentioned for comparison only.
